Hey there! Ready to explore Reykjavik like a local?

Join @Michaelthorpaoli, one of our amazing Marketing team members at Center Hotels, as he shares his top picks in the city. Michael, who’s half French and half Icelandic, has lived in both countries, giving him a unique blend of cultural insights. With a background as a costumier in film & TV, a bachelor's degree in tourism, and tons of experience as a certified tour guide, Michael brings creativity and expertise to everything he does. He’s been part of the Center Hotels family for three years and is passionate about Iceland’s rich culture and stunning landscapes.

Here are Michael’s top recommendations for what to do and see in Reykjavik:

Nauthólsvík Beach

Just a short distance from the city center and surrounded by nature, Nauthólsvík Beach is a little gem. This cozy beach is heated all year round by pumping geothermal water into the sea. It’s also where local sea swimming groups gather to take a chilly dip in the Atlantic waters and then warm up in the large hot tub right by the beach. It’s a favorite spot for locals, especially on those rare sunny days in Iceland. You can enjoy the area all year round, thanks to the many walking and cycling paths. It’s the perfect place to connect with nature in the capital area.

National Museum of Iceland

Dive into Iceland’s fascinating past at the National Museum of Iceland (Þjóðminjasafnið). The museum takes you on a journey through history, from the first settlers in the 8th and 9th centuries, through the Christianization and conversion to Lutheranism, to the 19th century’s birth of the Icelandic national identity and its fight for independence, and finally to the 20th century and beyond. Discover Viking relics, Catholic religious artifacts, and everyday items from the 20th century, like old sewing machines and Nokia phones. And don’t forget to try on some Viking attire in the dress-up corner!

Pósthús Food-Hall

Food halls are all the rage these days, and Pósthús Food-Hall is one of the newest and best in Reykjavik. Located in the old post office building from the early 20th century, this place is a visual treat with its large bay windows and retro art deco vibes. You’ll find a variety of food stations here, making it perfect for groups—there’s something for everyone, whether it’s steak, pizza, sushi, Korean, or Indian food, plus great wine and cocktails. Pro tip: if you want to snag a table and relax, head there around 5 pm for drinks and an early dinner, as it gets packed from 6 pm onwards, especially Thursday to Sunday.
