The first - and therefore - the oldest art museum in Iceland is Kjarvalsstaðir.  Located right in the city center, the museum houses the works of Jóhannes S. Kjarval, one of Iceland's most recognised and influential Icelandic artist.

Kjarvalsstaðir focuses mainly on paintings and sculptures of modern art.  The building itself is designed in Nordic modernism with floor-to-ceiling windows that face the large and open Klambratún park which is visited by inhabitants of Reykjavík all year round.

And if the spectacular art and the beautiful building aren't enough, Kjarvalsstaðir also includes one of Reykjavík's finest coffeehouses, "Museums' café" open every day from 10:00 to 17:00.
